A recent study has revealed which are the best – as well as which are the worst – rated hotel chains in the world.

The research was undertaken by a group of travel experts at Bounce – a global luggage storage company that operates in more than 1,000 cities.

What Was The Research Based On?

Taking into consideration some of the most popular hotel chains in the world – these have been ranked based on the below variables:

  • the average user review score of each of the hotel chains – based on customer reviews left on Best Company, TrustPilot and Facebook
  • the overall popularity of each of the hotel chains – based on the number of Google searches that each hotel chain had in the last twelve months

  • the availability of each hotel chain including the number of countries that each hotel chain operates in, as well as the number of hotels that they have within each country
  • the annual revenue generated by each hotel chain
  • the number of five-star locations that each of the hotel chains has.

Unfortunately, not all hotel chains were included in the research – which is due to there not being sufficient information based on the above factors for some.

This included the likes of Aman Resorts, Hyatt Hotels and Ibis.

Let’s now take a look at what the results showed – by revealing which hotel chains are the:

  • ‘most successful’
  • ‘least successful’
  • ‘best reviewed’

2. Holiday Inn (IHG) – which recorded an overall score of: 6.83/10

The company took the number one spot in this category, based on its recorded revenue ($3.3 billion), average customer rating, popularity and availability – with the hotel chain operating in 584 locations across a whopping 124 countries around the world.

And, just recently, Hilton announced that they are to grow their presence in the popular tourist destination of Mexico – by opening one of their largest all-inclusive resorts in the Mexican town of Tulum.

This is in addition to the other 15 hotels that they also plan to open in the country this year (2022).

Holiday Inn (IHG) and Four Seasons took the number two and three spots, respectively – which may come as a surprise due to Holiday Inn in fact not having a single five-star hotel in its portfolio of properties.

However, despite this, the hotel chain – which operates in 1,190 locations around the world – averaged a score of 4 out of 5 when it comes to its user rating.

Having received the lowest number (155,400) of Google searches – compared to all of the other hotel chains listed in the research – Park Plaza Hotels has been revealed as the ‘least successful’ hotel chain in the world.

Its limited number of properties (35) – in comparison to the other hotel chains involved in the research – is also another factor why the company recorded an overall score of 2/10, when taking into consideration all of the factors used in the study.

Econo Lodge and Raffles Hotels took the number two and three spots, respectively, in the category of ‘least successful’ hotels – with Raffles Hotels having the least number of hotels compared to all other hotel chains in the top ten.

The ‘Best Reviewed’ Hotel Chains In The World

At the top of the list when it comes to the ‘best reviewed’ hotel chains in the world is Marriott International’s, St. Regis brand – which recorded a highly impressive average user review score of 5 out of 5.

And, in fact, the other two hotel chains that made the top three in this category – JW Marriott and Sheraton Hotels – are also under the ownership of Marriott International, who were recently revealed as a competitor of AirBnB, due the company also now offering short-term private home rentals.

The ‘Worst Reviewed’ Hotel Chains In The World

The top four ‘worst reviewed’ hotel chains in the world – according to the research undertaken – are:

Econo Lodge Hotel Sign

3. Wyndham Hotels (Wyndham Hotel Group) – which recorded an overall score of: 2.7/5

4. Days Inn (Wyndham Hotel Group) – which recorded an overall score of: 2.7/5

With the lowest score (2.3/5) regarding its average user review, the budget hotel chain Econo Lodge – which is owned by Choice Hotels – takes the title of being the ‘worst reviewed’ hotel chain in the world.

The low average score comes as a result of the hotel chain not offering sufficient breakfast options for customers, as well as its hidden “resort fees” – according to the results of the study.
